The best Alexa party games to play out loud

Party games with no screen, no controllers, and no app to download — just a room full of people shouting at a smart speaker. We make seven of them. Full disclosure: this is our own fleet, so “best” here means “the seven we thought were funny enough to ship” — but every one is free to launch on any Echo.

How to start any of these

Say the magic words to any Alexa device — each game’s phrase is listed below — or hit its “Play on your Echo” button from your phone or computer: sign in to Amazon and the game launches on your speaker a few seconds later.

On the newer Alexa+ devices, the reliable syntax is “Alexa, open X” — “open” specifically. “Play X” or “start X” can send Alexa+ off to invent its own game instead, which is charming exactly once.

The seven games

Reverso

Free

Our flagship voice game. Alexa plays a phrase backwards, you attempt to say the gibberish out loud, and the machine scores how close your nonsense came. It is impossible to play with a straight face, which is the entire point — best with three or more people who are willing to embarrass themselves.

Say: Alexa, open reverso game

Pawn Step Sisters

Free

A haggling game against two big-haired pawn-shop sisters. Roxy reads people, Bambi knows what everything is worth, and you negotiate with both using nothing but your voice. Slower-burn than Reverso — good for two players who like talking their way out of things.

Trivia Harbor

Free

Straight-ahead trivia with a dockside accent. The harbor asks, you answer, and nobody has to pass a phone around. The most traditional game of the seven, which makes it the safest opener for a mixed room.

Say: Alexa, open trivia harbor

Sound Sleuth

Free

Alexa plays a mystery sound; you name it before the trail goes cold. Deceptively simple and genuinely competitive — the arguments about whether that was a kettle or a distant train are half the game.

Say: Alexa, open sound sleuth

Play on your Echo →

Crown Keeper

Free

You are a monarch defending a tiny kingdom by royal decree, and every decree is something you say out loud. Part strategy, part improv. The player who commits to the bit hardest tends to win the room, if not the kingdom.

Say: Alexa, open crown keeper

Play on your Echo →

Pickle Jar

Free

The lowest-effort party starter we make: pull a prompt from the jar and let the party argue. No score, no winner, just a machine that keeps handing your group things to fight about. Great while food is cooking.

Say: Alexa, open pickle jar

Locked Lantern

Free

An audio escape room lit by a single lantern. Listen for clues, talk through the puzzles, get out. The most atmospheric of the seven — play it with the lights down and the room will actually go quiet.

Say: Alexa, open locked lantern

No Echo in the room?

Most of our party games also live on the web — here’s the full out-loud lineup across phone, browser, and TV. And if the room has a Fire TV, four of our games come bundled in one app for the big screen.
